used to following <strong>instructions<\/strong>, opening a booklet that explains how that toy works or listening to indications, a more or less rigid path that guides us in a sequence of actions<\/span><span title=\"\">.<\/span> <span title=\"\">What if all this was limiting for a child?<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">What would happen if instead of following consequential steps, was given a final goal without caring about the route?<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">We find out with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rigamajig.com\/\">Rigamajic<\/a>, a toy without instructions<\/strong> that challenges different clich\u00e9s related to the sphere of childhood and the toy world in general.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-3-320x240.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-3-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"\">This <strong>construction toy<\/strong> appears unusual from a first glance, <em>&#8220;a beautiful pile of scrap to assemble&#8221;<\/em>, as the designer would call it; indeed the appearance is<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">heavy and the aesthetic is more of a prototype than a finished product (even if for the fanatics of the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meccano\"><strong>Meccano<\/strong><\/a>&#8216; it could be a stroke of lightning!). <span title=\"\"><strong>265 pieces<\/strong> of boards, wheels, ropes and various connectors made mainly of birch plywood and recycled nylon.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Both the wooden planks and the plastic connectors have <strong>no particular colors or finishes<\/strong> and this amazed us a lot, considering the positioning of the product in a market where chromatic and aesthetic research is fundamental for design&#8230;and for marketing<\/span> <span title=\"\">.<\/span> But going to the bottom of this choice we understand that it is part of a <strong>wider design thinking <\/strong>that wants to push the child to <strong>imagine<\/strong>, untying him\/her as much as possible from constraints, starting from the aesthetic ones.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-2-320x240.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-2-768x576.jpg 768w, translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">The <strong>dimensions<\/strong> are another not-really-encouraging aspect, we are used to constructions with relatively small or in any case manageable pieces, while with Rigamajic we find ourselves faced with large components and a toy with a <strong>strong impact on space<\/strong>.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">In a process of product analysis the question is: who said that a child cannot play with heavy pieces?<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">or rather, why not provide children with items to build objects on a real scale?<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">The starting point is always to provide <strong>tools<\/strong> to be free to invent;<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">if these are large and heavy for a child, he\/she will be forced to seek help from someone else, and if the invenction is built by two or more minds the results will certainly be more satisfying.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">Rigamajic, due to its characteristics, is designed for a <strong>school or museum environment<\/strong>, where young users have enough space and conditions to be able to create <strong>collectively and collaboratively<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5284\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/a-toy-without-instructions-1.jpg 800w, translation\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"\"><strong>A toy without instructions<\/strong> is complex by definition, but it&#8217;s exactly the<strong> complexity<\/strong> that helps to deepen and grow, from an early age;<\/span> <span title=\"\">the child, building without constraints and arriving at a tangible result, reaches the awareness of having made it by him\/herself.<\/span> <span title=\"\">This thinking starts from the assumption that Rigamajic is not born to build real objects, but to explore new forms and solutions to <strong>real situations<\/strong>;<\/span> <span title=\"\">citing a concrete example, the goal of the game is not to build a car, but a way to go to school.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The perspective then changes and is detached from the canons to which we are accustomed to embrace a <strong>new game mode<\/strong>, one in which the circumstances are built to play.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">Therefore there are no right or wrong answers, correct paths or not, but only pure and simple imagination.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n[su_youtube url=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IL1n6LuUIcQ&#8221;]\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"\">Rigamajic,\u00a0<strong>a toy without instructions<\/strong>, is the brainchild of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/casholman.com\/about\">Cas Holman<\/a><\/strong>, an American designer who has been designing for children for 18 years.<\/span> <span title=\"\">From play areas to toys to new educational-play systems for schools, her approach is interesting and guided by exploration and inventiveness.<\/span> <span title=\"\">To deepen her work we recommend the documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fDE7A68hVaw\"><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/a>, on Netflix, which has dedicated an episode to her and to her design method.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img
