{"id":4959,"date":"2018-10-25T19:41:11","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T17:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/?p=4959"},"modified":"2018-10-25T19:41:11","modified_gmt":"2018-10-25T17:41:11","slug":"tablet-help-autistic-children-communicate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/tablet-help-autistic-children-communicate\/","title":{"rendered":"A TABLET TO HELP AUTISTIC CHILDREN TO COMMUNICATE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article is about a nice case study from Italy on\u00a0<strong>design for autism<\/strong> that shows how the careful observation of the &#8216;state of the art&#8217;, can lead to an actualization and a useful and beneficial <strong>redesign<\/strong> for all the actors of a system. <strong>Blu(e)<\/strong> is <strong>a tablet to help autistic children to communicate<\/strong> and was invented by <strong>Needius<\/strong>, a company that deals with the design and implementation of technologies for special needs.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s begin by framing the current situation and by saying that the most used method to stimulate communication in patients with autism is the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augmentative_and_alternative_communication\"><strong>Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAA)<\/strong><\/a>; this is a clinical practice to facilitate and improve the relationships of all people who have difficulty using the most common communication channels, especially <strong>oral language and writing<\/strong>.\u00a0The most common tool consists of a set of\u00a0<strong>boards<\/strong> with elementary and specific graphical symbols to reproduce the various elements of the language (verbs, nouns, adjectives &#8230;); each symbol collection has a different purpose and stimulates the user in a different way also based on linguistic ability and the richness of words.\u00a0Because of its <strong>simplicity<\/strong> and intuitiveness in use, CAA is used not only in the treatment of a wide range of temporary or permanent <strong>disabilities<\/strong> including Alzheimer&#8217;s, Stroke and other diseases related to the nervous system, but also for the integration of foreign people.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4964\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-1-960x696.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-1-960x696.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-1-320x232.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-1-768x557.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-1-640x464.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This therapy is also widely used in the\u00a0<strong>childhood<\/strong> and in particular for the development of verbal communication in\u00a0kids with <strong>autism<\/strong>. From the observation of these practices the designers of <strong>Blu(e)<\/strong> have\u00a0found\u00a0an opportunity, that is to develop a <strong>digital<\/strong> version of a technique that is usually analog, <strong>a tablet to help autistic children to communicate<\/strong>. The technological solutions currently\u00a0developed to face the CAA are not really up to date and mainly thought in the preparatory phase of the boards,\u00a0therefore the actual\u00a0progression of the therapeutic activity still takes place in a physical way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4967\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-4-960x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-4-960x426.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-4-320x142.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-4-768x341.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-4-640x284.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The insight, however, was not only to <em>modernize<\/em> the game through digital, but to use all the <strong>potential<\/strong> of new technologies to collect <strong>data<\/strong>, monitor and act in a specific way. This solution relies on two of the key points of the CAA, the first is that of <strong>flexibility<\/strong> and <strong>customization<\/strong> of the cards and the second is the importance that this practice is carried out <strong>daily<\/strong> and especially outside the therapeutic room.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4965\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-2-960x357.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-2-960x357.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-2-320x119.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-2-768x286.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a-tablet-to-help-autistic-children-to-communicate-2-640x238.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But to appreciate the innovation of <strong>Blu(e)<\/strong> we need to explain you how this product-service system works. Blue(e) can be requested through the <strong>website<\/strong> and therefore, potentially, from all the actors involved in the life of the disabled child, from the parents to the therapist to the school.\u00a0In the <strong>packaging<\/strong> there is a <strong>code<\/strong> for activating the application, which allows the access to the <em>&#8216;backend&#8217;<\/em>, ie the platform for <strong>designing, managing and collecting data<\/strong>. This allows you to create <strong>symbols<\/strong>, divide them into <strong>categories<\/strong> to make specific cards for the child and finally collect data during the game activity on the tablet.
