This specific disease is also called juvenile or insulin-dependent diabetes because it usually occurs at a young age and is treated exclusively with insulin bites. The Mexican designer who designed <strong>an invention to help children with diabetes<\/strong> knows this issue really well.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.renatasouzaluque.com\/about\/\"><strong>Renata Souza Luque<\/strong><\/a> graduated in Product Design at Parsons School of Design, and she began designing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.renatasouzaluque.com\/thomy\/\"><strong>THOMY<\/strong><\/a> after discovering that her 6-year-old cousin had been diagnosed with diabetes. Although it is a fairly extensive problem, the knowledge of this disease is not widespread. To design\u00a0<strong>an invention to help children with diabetes<\/strong>\u00a0the designer has set her research on the <strong>observation of the daily routine<\/strong> of her family member. In addition to observing an extremely controlled diet, a patient with DT1 must deal with 2 to 5 injections of insulin per day. This means always carrying a series of tools, almost never designed for the main user: the <strong>child<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4703\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-2-960x459.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-2-960x459.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-2-320x153.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-2-768x368.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-2-640x306.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-2.jpg 1404w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among the other critical issues identified Renata decided to focus on three fundamental elements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the <strong>rotation<\/strong> of the injection point (which can not be the same twice in a row)<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>ergonomics<\/strong> of the injection pen (almost never child-friendly)<\/li>\n<li>the importance of administering the <strong>full dose<\/strong> of medicine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From these elements began the design of <strong>an invention to help children with diabetes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4704\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-3-960x718.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-3-960x718.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-3-320x239.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-3-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-3-640x479.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-3.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>THOMY<\/strong> is a medical device for <strong>insulin<\/strong> injection. It consists of some tattoos that display the areas of bites and a syringe. The temporary <strong>tattoo<\/strong> has colored dots that the child removes one at a time with alcohol before each injection. When, after about three days, all the stains of color on the tattoo are deleted, the child removes the first tattoo and makes a second one in another point of the body. The &#8216;<strong>pen<\/strong>&#8216; to inject the insulin has a playful and appealing design, as well as being compatible with all the medical cartridges on the market. The designer has drew 3 different illustrations, choosing <strong>fun and captivating<\/strong> themes for the child, such as planets and rockets, fish or paper planes. The motivations of this choice are mainly related to the idea that the child should not perceive Thomy as a medical device, should not feel the weight of a cure to be carried and a &#8216;stigma&#8217; on the skin. The tattoo must be something beautiful, to show proudly to their friends.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4705\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-4-960x419.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-4.png 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-4-320x140.png 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-4-768x335.png 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/an-invention-to-help-children-with-diabetes-4-640x279.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last but not least\u00a0element is the <strong>packaging<\/strong> of the set. <em>&#8216;More than the shape of the case for this product, I focused on developing an <strong>emotional attachment<\/strong> to the product. I wanted it to be something that the children with the DT1 were proud to take with them and show <strong>without shame<\/strong>.&#8217;<\/em> These words of the inventor of <strong>THOMY<\/strong> summarize well the thought that should be the basis of a design for the <strong>medical<\/strong>.
