That desire by Niamh is now reality in Alder Hey&#8217;s pediatric hospital in Liverpool that introduced <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.alderhey.alderplay\">Alder Play<\/a>, an app\u00a0created to help\u00a0kids during\u00a0therapies<\/strong> that combines <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augmented_reality\">Augmented Reality<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artificial_intelligence\">Artificial Intelligence<\/a><\/strong> for a better hospital experience.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4519\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-2-960x540.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-2-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-2-640x360.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several studies at Alder Hey Hospital, one of the UK&#8217;s most renowned pediatric centers, show that a distracted child is more easily treatable and in shorter times. Often some hospital analysis and procedures are painful, especially for a child, but they are\u00a0needed\u00a0and there is no way to avoid them. It is therefore important to make those moments more\u00a0<strong>comforting<\/strong> for the little patients and reward them for their courage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-3-960x540.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-3.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-3-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-3-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-3-640x360.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Starting from these considerations the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/category\/design\/\"><strong>designers<\/strong><\/a> from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ustwo.com\/\">UsTwo<\/a><\/strong>, an English studio, began the field research listening to children, nurses, doctors and looking around to understand how to develop a solution that easily integrates\u00a0with the environment, without distorting it. The research has brought interesting insights: in the doctors&#8217; rooms there were often &#8216;DIY&#8217; solutions of <strong>screens<\/strong> to reproduce the children&#8217;s favorite cartoons. Another inspiration was that of the surrounding environment: the hospital is built in such a way as to blend in with the <strong>landscape<\/strong>, has a hilly appearance and on the inner walls there are several natural illustrations and friendly animals, easily reproduced in a kid-friendly interface.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4521\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-4-960x540.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-4.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-4-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-4-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-4-640x360.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>An app\u00a0created to help\u00a0kids during\u00a0therapies<\/strong> was therefore a solution derived from the direct <strong>observation<\/strong> of the context. The hills became an integral part of the computer experience and the characters painted on the walls\u00a0became <strong>partners<\/strong> of the children during their hospital stay. Before arriving at the hospital, the child chooses his <strong>buddy<\/strong>\u00a0who starts to stand next to him immediately, explaining where and what he will do. Moreover this companion, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augmented_reality\"><strong>Augmented Reality<\/strong><\/a>, is integrated into the hospital rooms and appears in different places during the child&#8217;s stay, carrying him in the exploration of space. <strong>Exploratory activity<\/strong> is a very important element to reassure the child in a place that is unknow to him and that could frighten him; This is why <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.alderhey.alderplay\">Alder Play<\/a><\/strong> encourages young patients to discover different places in a sort of <strong>treasure hunt<\/strong> and rewards them every time they reach a goal.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Our vision is to transform the children&#8217;s experience in the hospital. We want to distract patients during treatment and reduce their fears<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nik Barnes, Alder Hey Consultant<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Besides the playful and explorative aspect, is very interesting the integration of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artificial_intelligence\"><strong>Artificial Intelligence<\/strong><\/a> into the reassuring process of kids and parents. The design studio has integrated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/watson\/\"><strong>IBM Watson<\/strong><\/a> technology into the application, which through a chatbox called <strong>&#8216;Ask Oli&#8217;<\/strong>, is able to answer the questions of children and parents about medical procedures or hospital spaces. The application aims not only to <strong>relieve<\/strong> children and parents, but also to <strong>educate<\/strong> them with videos and activities on future\u00a0treatments, such as blood tests. Again, <strong>rewards<\/strong> are provided by the medical staff who <strong>encourage<\/strong> the child and help him build a <strong>relationship<\/strong> with doctors and nurses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-5-960x540.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-5.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-5-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-5-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/an-app-created-to-help-kids-during-therapies-5-640x360.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.alderhey.alderplay\"><strong>Alder Play<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is a complete project, which takes in consideration all the <strong>players<\/strong> in the reference context and offers digitally innovative and integrated solutions, becoming a\u00a0good case study\u00a0of how new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/category\/technology\/\">technologies<\/a><\/strong> can be\u00a0a support in sensitive areas such as pediatric hospital. It is important to point out that <strong>an app created to help kids during therapies<\/strong> is the result of the co-design and collaboration of various professionals who in the case of Alder Play were the NHS, the design studio, the staff and hospital patients and several local public and private donors.
