How to fight the surplus of technology <\/b><\/a>during kids days? How to avoid all the time they spent in front of a tablet? How to make the moment of play both active and educational<\/b><\/a>? These could be three of many questions that the designers at frog <\/b><\/a>asked themselves in developing Yibu<\/a>, a wooden toy set to approach technology.<\/b><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Toy design<\/b> born from many different field analysis<\/b> that proved a great increase of time that children spend at home because of \u2018hyper-security\u2019 parent\u2019s need. <\/b>According to these analysis the consequence is that 70% of kids between 3 and 7 y.o. use a smartphone\/tablet to play daily. <\/b><\/p>\n

However, this can\u2019t be defined as a problem, rather a strong evidence of so-called progress<\/b>, whether it is technological, economic or sociological. Only in 2016, digital educational gaming market produced 2.6 billion $<\/b>, and global trends indicate an exponential growth<\/b> of this value, which will reach 7.3 billion in 2021<\/b>. Starting from these questions and datas, a team by the international design agency frog<\/b><\/a> China, developed Yibu<\/b><\/a>, asking themselves if it were possible to create a wooden toy set to approach technology<\/b> in a new way, not necessarily and exclusively linked to a device display.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Yibu<\/b><\/a> (\u2018first step\u2019 <\/b>in Mandarin) is made by 5 analogic-charme products with sensors<\/b> that speak and interact with an app<\/b> in order to educate<\/b><\/a> children on environment problem<\/b> and encourage them to be active<\/b> in their daily challenges and in the exploration <\/b>of the world that surround them.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Each product has a characteristic color detail<\/b> and a specific sensor<\/b> inside: light, sound, direction, movement or temperature. Kid has to use the physical toy to solve the problems of a polar bear<\/b>, main character of the app for tablet. For example, if the bear is on an iceberg in the middle of the ocean and it\u2019s hot, kid can put the temperature-related toy in the fridge to save the bear from the melting of its makeshift boat.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The app in this case is an amplification of the reality. It shows real problems and situations related to environment, so on one side kids are aware <\/b>of this theme, on the other it calls them to action<\/b> starting from little daily challenges<\/b> that they need to fight toghether with the polar bear. The screen becomes an integral part of the activity and represent a digital<\/b> tool for real-world exploration.<\/p>\n

This example shows how a wooden toy set to approach technology<\/b> can be a viable and overwhelming solutions to overcoming screens on children\u2019s days. Yibu<\/b><\/a> is etymologically and physically a \u2018first step\u2019 in the technological<\/b><\/a> world in an educational key; moreover is able to transform the experience of home play in a very interesting and inspiring way by making it dynamic and engaging.<\/p>\n
