Stories allow kids to communicate thoughts and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/what-do-kids-think-about-sharing\/\" target=\"_blank\">share<\/a><\/strong> feelings\u00a0with others and it can be innovatively improved using <strong>wooden toys that can teach\u00a0kinetic arts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/142410721\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/142410721\">LINKKI<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/comicinema\">Eun Young Park<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/eunyoungpark.co\/tag\/linkki\/\" target=\"_blank\">LINKKI<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is a <strong>kinetic construction toy<\/strong> based on planar linkage mechanism which children can use to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/category\/design\/\" target=\"_blank\">design<\/a>\u00a0movements<\/strong>, make <strong>kinetic arts<\/strong> and learn basic <strong>STEM subjects<\/strong> while playing.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The traditional 2D storytelling such as in films and comics\u00a0seems to have\u00a0popped up from the flat\u00a0page, screening into the 3D physical space, also with interaction.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eunyoungpark.co\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Eun Young Park<\/strong> <\/a>designed and experimented some works trying the potential of the<strong> movement for telling\u00a0stories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A series of <strong>experiments with movement<\/strong> and <strong>interaction<\/strong> were carried out and ended up with the installations called <strong>Mechanical Cartoon<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Study 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wpex-responsive-media\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Oongsung Oongsung\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/82282785?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\"  allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Study 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wpex-responsive-media\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mechanical Cartoon, Study 2\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/96174374?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\"  allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Working on these works she noticed the strong need for a <strong>simple and intuitive tool<\/strong> for this specific\u00a0purpose: <strong>designing movement<\/strong>. Especially in prototyping the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/eunyoungpark.co\/mechanical-cartoon-study-\u2161\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mechanical Cartoon study 2<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0she was\u00a0intrigued by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linkage_%28mechanical%29\" target=\"_blank\">linkage mechanism<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of parts with each other.<\/p>\n<p>The lectures of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/courses.csail.mit.edu\/6.849\/fall12\/\" target=\"_blank\">Erik Demaine<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/courses.csail.mit.edu\/6.S080\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chuck Hoberman<\/a><\/strong> also opened her eyes for the\u00a0capability of LINKKI to enable <strong>sophisticated movement design<\/strong> just by connecting bars. She actually bridged separate fields, from origami to DNA folding.<\/p>\n<p>Another inspiration came when she found the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Friedrich_Fr\u00f6bel\" target=\"_blank\">Friedrich Fr\u00f6bel\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/category\/educational\/\" target=\"_blank\">educational<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/theiff.org\/gallery\/06_gifts.html\" target=\"_blank\">Gift<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>toys of Bauhaus\u00a0<\/strong><strong>artists<\/strong> and other <strong>modernist artists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Symbolizing life, science and art with the same abstract\u00a0material to realize the interconnectivity and unity of them.<\/p>\n<p>Friedrich Fr\u00f6bel<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So the idea of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/eunyoungpark.co\/tag\/linkki\/\" target=\"_blank\">LINKKI<\/a><\/strong> was born, with this background, becoming an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/category\/educational\/\" target=\"_blank\">educational<\/a> toy<\/strong> to learn\u00a0about\u00a0<strong>kinetic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/category\/design\/\" target=\"_blank\">design<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>physical interaction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2451\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2451 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_2.jpg\" alt=\"wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_2\" width=\"800\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_2-320x261.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_2-768x626.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_2-640x522.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The key for this toy to work as design platform is its <strong>simplicity<\/strong> and <strong>flatness<\/strong>. The flat mechanism makes the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/category\/design\/\" target=\"_blank\">design<\/a> process<\/strong>\u00a0fast, easy, and intuitive, where engineering, mechanics, robotics, electronics and model making is involved. But it feels just like drawing\u00a0on the paper! Furthermore, flat parts also enable children to make their own\u00a0parts with materials such as paper or cardboard, that is, it\u2019s <strong>easy to hack<\/strong> and <strong>open-ended<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0LINKKI\u00a0building set<\/strong> is formed by 16 types of bars with four different shapes (perforated, with slit, angled and triangular) and also two different sizes circles.\u00a0Even if you can make moves manually with a <strong>hand crank<\/strong> you also can use <strong>three types of motors<\/strong>: full rotation, limited\u00a0rotation and interactive motors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2455\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2455 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_3-960x797.jpg\" alt=\"wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_3\" width=\"768\" height=\"638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_3-960x797.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_3-320x266.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_3-768x638.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_3-640x531.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wooden_toys_giocattoli_in_legno_3.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0<strong>LINKKI<\/strong>\u00a0users can <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/category\/design\/\" target=\"_blank\">design<\/a> movements<\/strong> whether for <strong>kinetic prototyping<\/strong> or for <strong>storytelling<\/strong>.\u00a0Besides this primary usage of the toy, it also\u00a0can<strong>\u00a0draw traces<\/strong>\u00a0on the paper from the linkage of parts, and the\u00a0drawing mechanism can be driven either by a hand crank or a motor.\u00a0Inspired by the<strong>\u00a0traditional drawing tools<\/strong> such as ellipsograph, based on <strong>linkage mechanism<\/strong>, the designer tried to prototype as many linkages as possible to draw.
