In this sense\u00a0a<strong> toy designer<\/strong> that cares for education\u00a0at first should find out how to engage\u00a0kids with what he\/she intends to teach. For instance Maths.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Toy designer<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.klouche.com\" target=\"_blank\">Khalil Klouche<\/a><\/strong> reinvented the traditional calculator with his <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.klouche.com\/knock-knock\/\" target=\"_blank\">Knock Knock<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0Here children have to concentrate on simple equations\u00a0more than they expect.\u00a0Aimed to small children, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.klouche.com\/knock-knock\/\" target=\"_blank\">Knock Knock<\/a><\/strong> is a playful calculator which\u00a0allows simple calculations by <strong>knocking on the wood surface<\/strong> and receiving the answer using the same\u00a0knocking tone. When you rap your knuckles on this plus-sized wooden calculator an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arduino.cc\" target=\"_blank\">Arduino<\/a><\/strong> controller inside knocks back with the solution to your <strong>math problems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2332\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2332 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_2.jpg\" alt=\"wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_2\" width=\"818\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_2.jpg 818w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_2-320x219.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_2-768x526.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_2-640x438.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 818px) 100vw, 818px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Initially, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.klouche.com\" target=\"_blank\">Klouche<\/a><\/strong> created <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.klouche.com\/knock-knock\/\" target=\"_blank\">Knock Knock<\/a><\/strong> for an exhibit at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mudac.ch\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of Design and Contemporary Art<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(MUDAC) in Lausanne (Switzerland), tapped childhood memories of playing with his father\u2019s calculator. Those same recollections provided crucial insight into how to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/category\/design\/\" target=\"_blank\">design<\/a><\/strong> for an optimal learning:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.klouche.com\/knock-knock\/\" target=\"_blank\">Knock Knock<\/a><\/strong> is a toy with which children should be able to<strong> slowly decipher its mysterious behavior<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.klouche.com\" target=\"_blank\">Klouche<\/a><\/strong> also stresses the<strong> importance of having to sit and listen<\/strong> to literally every numbered knock. <strong>Patience<\/strong> is not a common skill in children, but <strong>curiosity<\/strong> might play a crucial role for them to learn this important principle of life.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Having to <strong>wait<\/strong> for 72 knocks makes you really feel how 72\u00a0is bigger than 15, whereas visually it\u2019s not obvious.<\/p>\n<p>Khalil Klouche<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The use of this <strong>wooden toy<\/strong> is very easy and intuitive. For example, to calculate a sum, the kid must\u00a0knock the number corresponding to the sign so to multiply by two, you must knock twice on the \u2018X\u2019\u00a0symbol. After that, the total of the sum is answered by the <strong>wooden calculator<\/strong> with knocking sounds via\u00a0the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>In this case the toy designer found a simple way of stimulating a wider number of\u00a0<strong>senses<\/strong> with an innovative <strong>redesign<\/strong> of a classic\u00a0piece of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/category\/technology\/\" target=\"_blank\">technology<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2331\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2331 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_3.jpg\" alt=\"wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_3\" width=\"818\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_3.jpg 818w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_3-320x219.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_3-768x526.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toy-design.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/wooden_toys_design_design_giocattoli_in_legno_3-640x438.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 818px) 100vw, 818px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, children use to play and interact with <strong>touch screens<\/strong> and all the new <strong>technological interfaces<\/strong> but\u00a0this <strong>wooden toy<\/strong> can surprise kids using an unexpected <strong>sensory experience<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.klouche.com\/knock-knock\/\" target=\"_blank\">Knock Knock<\/a><\/strong> acts like a<strong> counting box<\/strong>, absorbing knocks from the wooden surface, and then &#8220;talking\u00a0back&#8221; also with knocks to give the mathematical answer.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>wooden toy<\/strong> contains four <strong>microphones<\/strong>, each within an own compartment. When you knock on\u00a0the surface, the microphones of each compartment &#8220;listen&#8221; and the one receiving the strongest signal\u00a0processes the sound. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.klouche.com\" target=\"_blank\">Klouche<\/a><\/strong> programmed an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arduino.cc\" target=\"_blank\">Arduino<\/a><\/strong> <strong>board<\/strong> that connects with an <strong>electromagnet<\/strong> in\u00a0the center of the box, where the knocks\u00a0answer\u00a0happen.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The goal was to create a design piece that explores the sense of touch, but I wanted to create something warmer and\u00a0more likable than tablets and smartphones<\/p>\n<p>Khalil Klouche<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think Khalil not only acted as a toy designer that cares for education but also tried to give children a different\u00a0interaction experience. It feels like a true dialogue between the machine and the kid because the 4 arithmetic symbols (add, subtract, multiply and divide) are operated\u00a0the same way kids can operate sensorially with\u00a0a\u00a0wooden block.
