In order to allow children to play freely, encouraging in this way\u00a0the development of skills non gender-related, there is probably the need to develop\u00a0educational toys\u00a0without gender roles,<\/strong>\u00a0that basically is not to restrict gender to\u00a0stereotypes.<\/p>\n

Parents with both sons and daughters often see differences in the way their kids play. There are\u00a0toys<\/strong> that define male or female typical play, but what kids do with their toys alone?<\/strong>\u00a0There is for sure a general\u00a0gender preference of children for different types of play,<\/strong>\u00a0yet this doesn\u2019t mean necessarily the toy\u00a0itself has to be\u00a0for\u00a0girls or for boys, unless directing this kind of process is a clear educational belief.<\/p>\n

So today the general trend is to sort\u00a0toys by their theme and\/or function rather than gender<\/strong>, taking\u00a0down the pink and blue signs in stores and on packaging, letting toys just being toys<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gendered toys limit the range of skills and attributes that both boys and girls can explore through play, they may prevent children from developing their full range of interests, preferences, and talents.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Sweet<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The designer Valent\u00edn Andrade<\/strong> has reflected about the gender and its identity as a variable concept\u00a0through time and how to label \u201cfemale\u201d or \u201cmale\u201d toys can affect kids\u2019 identity<\/strong>.\u00a0This is how Ludomix<\/strong> <\/a>was\u00a0born. This wooden toy<\/strong> aims to promote interaction and development of\u00a0skills that have been restricted by gender roles established by society.<\/p>\n

Ludomix<\/strong><\/a> has two instances, one constructive<\/strong> and another communicative<\/strong>, favoring in this way inductive relationship<\/strong> to form a coherent whole, oral expression, participation in communicative situations\u00a0and cooperation in the game.<\/p>\n

Andrade<\/strong> thinks playing without distinction of the gender,<\/strong>\u00a0re-defining objects, allows kids to express their creativity<\/strong>\u00a0with building tasks and the consequent oral communication. Thereby, as\u00a0children play with Ludomix<\/a><\/strong> they can learn<\/strong> notions of logic, spatial and linguistic consistency, in children\u00a0from 4 years old and up.<\/p>\n

Ludomix<\/a><\/strong> is formed by 5 characters; Diafene, Sk\u00e1vonex, Tr\u00e9xiflo, Vatmoner and \u00c1lmaga. But their parts\u00a0are interchangeable to allow children create<\/strong> an endless number of new characters. They can\u00a0build<\/strong> their own character without any restriction.\u00a0Ludomix characters are made of native wood<\/strong>, Lenga or Raul\u00ed, dyed with natural tints, to encourage the use of\u00a0natural materials and sensorial features in\u00a0education<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can adopt each character of Ludomix<\/a><\/strong> indepently, buying them separately to collect them and combine their different parts to create your own character.\u00a0Furthermore, you can also purchase the complete set<\/strong> to experience the full dynamic of the game.\u00a0Which is composed of characters, board, cards, dice and an hourglass.<\/p>\n

Each character include its respective cards and instructions. In case you have more than one wooden character<\/strong> you can apply the game rules<\/strong> to combine and create new names and characters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the instructions Andrade<\/strong> suggests a way to play. First of all, you have to choose one character with\u00a0its corresponding cards of the body, extremities and hair. Dissasemble the choosen character and mix\u00a0your cards with the cards of the other players. Then you have to pick up a\u00a0card of the\u00a0body, of the extremities and the hair, and depending on the obtaining cards, each kid has to build a new character<\/strong> with a new name<\/strong> and with different colors and shape<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We need to change the way we think about boys and girls\u00a0and what\u2019s appropriate for them from a very early age.\u00a0Does the choice of toys matter?
\nI believe it does.<\/p>\n

As we can see it is important for kids to have the safety of\u00a0exploring<\/strong>\u00a0while playing with whatever they want without feeling ashamed regardless of\u00a0gender<\/strong>, they can achieve\u00a0anything despite what traditional ideas of gender identity may dictate.<\/p>\n

Gender neutrality toys<\/strong>\u00a0allow kids through play without\u00a0the boundaries of traditional\u00a0gender roles<\/strong>\u00a0to iron out\u00a0real-world gender inequalities<\/strong>\u00a0in the future and\u00a0combat current\u00a0gender equality issues<\/strong>\u00a0like gender disparities in science and\u00a0technology<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0jobs.<\/p>\n

So, let’s help children\u00a0feel free<\/strong>\u00a0to choose\u00a0and\u00a0play<\/strong>\u00a0with any toy they like, avoiding any kind of restriction\u00a0about\u00a0gender roles<\/strong>\u00a0or stereotypes, getting\u00a0in this way all the benefits from play\u00a0that promote a wide variety of skills and that help them develop their own unique aptitudes.<\/p>\n
